Ethical Considerations in Product Design

Every product is a set of decisions, and some of those decisions have consequences beyond the balance sheet. What the product is made from, who makes it, how long it lasts, and what happens to it afterwards: these are design choices, made early, mostly invisible to the customer, and very hard to reverse once tooling is cut.

This is not an argument for perfect products. Perfect is not on the menu. It is an argument for making these choices deliberately instead of by default, because the defaults are usually the worst option on every count.

Materials: the decision that outlives the product

Material choice is the single biggest ethical lever in most products. It decides the carbon footprint, the recyclability, and often the working conditions in the supply chain that produces it.

The practical questions are simple to ask. Can this part use a recycled or recyclable grade without losing performance. Can two materials become one, so the product can actually be recycled instead of theoretically recycled. Does the finish or additive that looks good in the render make the whole part unrecyclable.

Mixed materials are the quiet killer. A plastic housing with a co-moulded rubber grip and a foil badge is three recycling streams glued together, which in practice means none. Single-material design takes more engineering effort. That effort is the ethical cost of entry.

Longevity: the greenest product is the one still in use

A product that lasts ten years has half the footprint of one replaced every five, regardless of what either is made from. Designing for longevity means honest engineering margins, materials that age well, and mechanisms tested well past their expected life.

It also means repairability. A product that dies because one two-dollar part failed, and cannot be opened without breaking it, is a design decision, not an accident. Standard fasteners instead of glue, a battery that can be replaced, spare parts that exist: none of this is technically hard. It just has to be decided early. New Zealand is now paying attention to this through the right to repair movement, and regulation overseas is moving the same way. Products designed today should assume repairability will be expected within their lifetime.

Labour: know who makes your product

Offshore manufacturing is not an ethical problem. Unexamined offshore manufacturing is. The difference is whether anyone from your side has actually stood in the factory.

The questions that matter: have the working conditions been seen firsthand, not just certified on paper. Is the factory paying properly and running legal hours. Would you be comfortable publishing the name of the factory that makes your product. If the honest answer to the last one is no, that answer is telling you something.

This is one reason we keep our own staff on the ground in China. Audit paperwork can be arranged. What you see on an unannounced Tuesday visit cannot.

Honesty: the claim is part of the product

Greenwash is now a compliance risk, not just a moral one. Regulators in Australia and Europe are actively prosecuting environmental claims that do not hold up, and consumer trust does not survive being caught once.

The rule is simple. Claim only what you can evidence. “Made with 40% recycled plastic” with a supplier certificate behind it beats “eco-friendly” with nothing behind it, in law and in the eyes of any customer paying attention. If sustainability is part of your brand, build the evidence chain during development, because retrofitting proof after launch rarely works.

Safety beyond the standard

Compliance standards are the floor, not the ceiling. Standards lag real-world use by years, and they test products used as intended. Real users are children, tired people, and people who never read the manual.

Ethical design means asking what happens when the product is misused in the ways it predictably will be. The button battery that a toddler can reach, the cord that loops, the part that becomes a projectile when it fails: a standard may permit all of these in a given category. That does not make shipping them a neutral act.

Making it practical

None of this requires a purpose-driven brand or a premium price point. It requires adding a handful of questions to decisions you are already making.

At material selection: can this be one material, and can it be a recycled grade. At engineering: what fails first, and can it be replaced. At factory selection: who has seen this factory, and when. At marketing: can every claim survive a regulator reading it.

Asked early, each of these costs almost nothing. Asked late, each is a redesign. That is the honest economics of ethical design: it is cheap as a habit and expensive as a correction.
