How Much Does Product Development Cost in New Zealand?

Nobody publishes real numbers for this question, which is exactly why we are going to. The honest answer has a range, because a silicone kitchen tool and a connected medical device are different projects. But ranges are useful, vagueness is not, so here is how the money actually works.

The short answer

For a typical consumer product in New Zealand, taking an idea to a production-ready design costs somewhere between NZD $15,000 and $40,000 in design and engineering fees. Tooling to manufacture it adds roughly NZD $10,000 to $50,000 depending on the product. Simple products land under these ranges, and electronics, medical devices and certified products land above them. Everything below explains where in those ranges your product sits and why.

How the work is structured

At Pro-Dev, projects run in stages, each quoted as a fixed estimate before it starts: concept design, detailed CAD and engineering, prototyping, then packaging, costing and tooling preparation. Each stage ends with something concrete: concepts you can evaluate, a CAD pack a factory can quote from, a prototype you can hold. Staging exists to protect you. To make that real: recent staged projects at Pro-Dev have ranged from a two-stage product review and prototype at under NZD $3,000, through mid-size consumer products at NZD $15,000 to $24,000 across three to five stages, up to a multi-stage connected device at around NZD $35,000. The spread is the honest story: the product decides the number.

What drives the number up

Four things, mostly. Complexity: every additional part, mechanism and material adds design, engineering and testing hours. Electronics: firmware, batteries and wireless roughly double a development budget compared to a purely mechanical product, and add certification. Compliance: products for children, food contact or medical use carry standards that shape the whole design, which is cheaper than it sounds if planned early and expensive if not. And iteration: some products need one prototype round, some need three. Prototyping itself is cheap; the rule is find the problems in plastic, not in production.

The costs after design

Design fees are only the first act. Tooling is the big cheque: steel moulds for a typical plastic consumer product run from around NZD $10,000 for a simple single-part product to $50,000 or more for a multi-part assembly. Then come per-unit production costs, freight, compliance testing, packaging and a pilot run. Two offsets deserve a mention. Printed production can defer tooling entirely for low volumes, which suits products still finding their market. Where budgets actually get wasted

The expensive projects are rarely the complex ones. They are the ones that skipped a cheap step early: no feasibility check before design, no design for manufacture before quoting, no compliance planning before tooling. Each of those skips converts a hundreds-of-dollars question into a tens-of-thousands redesign. The cheapest money in product development is always spent at the front.

How to budget for yours

Treat the first stage as the affordable test of the whole idea. A concept stage costs a few thousand dollars and tells you what the full journey will cost with real numbers attached, because estimating your specific product is part of the work.
